The Gutenberg Foundation and the International Gutenberg Society in Mainz e.V. invite to print, to discuss and to read, to puzzle over something and to play in Gutenberg’s workshop in the lulu, the new shopping and art mall in the old Karstadt building of Mainz.
Doing Good for Gutenberg
Ever since the reopening of the lulu at the end of May 2021, the Gutenberg shop offers its products right at the main entrance. The available products and souvenirs, from ‘The Smallest Book of the World’ to the Carnival PiepEi, include a voluntary donation to the Gutenberg Museum.
Mainz for Gutenberg
From now on, the funding organisation of the Gutenberg Museum will be present as well. They want to make contact with the citizens of Mainz and whet their appetite for ‘their museum’:
„We want to mobilise the citizens of Mainz for the Gutenberg Museum and encourage them to become involved. Many people participated in the citizens’ initiative for the ‘Bibelturm’ three years ago. We want to take them along on our journey to the new Gutenberg Museum. Including the citizens’ initiatives (formerly for and against Bibelturm) on the city’s part in the planning of the new building helped in establishing very active civic participation. Beyond that, we want to address every single person and inform all those interested in the development and plans regarding the new museum. The fact that Johannes Gutenberg came from Mainz and produced the first printed book in the Western world here is a big honour and great chance for our city. We are campaigning for Mainz to be known nationally and internationally as the Gutenberg city and for the Gutenberg Museum to radiate this reputation.“ (Anne Blicke, Gutenberg Foundation)
Printing for Gutenberg
In Gutenberg’s workshop, you will find the recently published feasibility analysis for the new Gutenberg Museum. Those who do not want to read the whole brochure can find out more about it in a nice conversation in the lulu.
Moreover, everyone who is interested can make their very own printed products in exchange for a donation in a small printing workshop right there – with reference to the Gutenberg Museum’s own printing shop, which gives professionals and amateurs, young and old alike, the unique opportunity to get creative. In addition, the Gutenberg-Jahrbücher (Gutenberg annuals) provide insight into book studies, at a gaming table you can play the ‚Bleilaus‘, a book printer-blind fish, and the Gutenberg quiz holds a prize in prospect.
Of course, you can become a member of the Gutenberg Society or join the Friends of Gutenberg with a regular donation for the Gutenberg Museum while you are on a visit to the Gutenberg workshop.
