Friends of Gutenberg – Jour Fixe

Under the motto "Wine and Knowledge", the Gutenberg Foundation and the Gutenberg Society once again cordially invite you to the evening lecture series "Friends of Gutenberg – Jour Fixe" followed by a wine tasting in the Kulturei Mainz, a spectacular Mainz cultural ambience.

Topic: "Inscriptions and (no) end? – On the genesis of a new publication on the historical inscriptions of the Mayen-Koblenz district."
Speaker: Dr. Eberhard J. Nikitsch

We are surrounded by writing everywhere – on posters, buildings and street signs. But this is not the only feature of our modern world: historical inscriptions on graves and monuments, wall and panel paintings, field and road crosses or a wide variety of objects such as bells can give us unique insights into the culture of a region.

The project "Die deutschen Inschriften des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit" (German Inscriptions of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Period), founded over 70 years ago as a joint venture of the scientific academies in Germany and Austria, collects all Latin and German inscriptions from the Middle Ages to the year 1650. In the associated edition series "Die Deutschen Inschriften" (The German Inscriptions, www.inschriften.net), the comprehensive edition volume "Die Inschriften des Lkrs. Mayen-Koblenz 1" (The Inscriptions of the Mayen-Koblenz District 1) was published at the beginning of October 2021. In 532 chronologically ordered catalogue numbers, the volume of inscriptions records the inscriptions of the south-eastern part of the present-day district of Mayen-Koblenz (former district of Koblenz and the town of Andernach) from the end of the 5th century to the year 1650, usually translated from Latin and annotated from various points of view.

In his lecture, Dr. Eberhard J. Nikitsch will discuss the history of the origins of the "German Inscriptions" as one of the oldest research projects of the Mainz Academy, which is closely linked to Mainz, and will describe the meaning and purpose of the scientific study of medieval and early modern inscriptions on the basis of the complicated history of the origins of the current volume of inscriptions. The lecture will be followed by a small wine tasting.
