Friends of Gutenberg – Jour Fixe

Topic: Thoughts about books – about a book series, the Stiftung Buchkunst and much more.
Speaker: Silvia Werfel M. A.

A lecture with books to touch, leaf through and discuss

In her lecture, Silvia Werfel will introduce the series "Ästhetik des Buches" (Aesthetics of the Book), edited by Klaus Detjen at Wallstein Verlag, in which 16 volumes have been published since 2013. The handy volumes contain essays, sometimes accompanied by more, sometimes by fewer images, on Johannes Gutenberg, Jan Tschichold, Stanley Morison or Friedrich Forssman, for example – on the book as a space (design concepts), on the book in space (library, book trade), on design principles and on the book as a "reading machine".

The focus of the series is on the text. Each volume is also a design statement. Volume 15, "Buchgestaltung in Deutschland" (Book Design in Germany), edited by Silvia Werfel herself, is the first volume in the series to offer a larger, yet highly condensed overview of a topic with more illustrations. A comparison with publications on a similar topic by Hans Peter Willberg (1930-2003), for example, is obvious – and drawn.

About the speaker: Silvia Werfel, born in Leipzig in 1958, did an apprenticeship as a typesetter after graduating from high school, then studied book studies, German language and literature and history at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and at the University in Zurich and has been a freelance journalist and specialist author since the mid-1980s. She lives in Wiesbaden and has two grown-up sons.
